" My Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grand-Parents "

John Shepherd ( 1 ) was born in the early 1700's and was believed to have been born in Germany.   The name of his parents, and date of his birth is unknown at this time.   He married " Margaret _____? ", whose last name and other personal information is currently unknown.

According to the records in the Hunterdon County Historical society John ( 1 ) was emigrating to America in 1754 along with his wife and " 4 " children  ( Richard, John, Henry, & Peter Shepherd ).   As their ship was nearing the shores of New York John ( 1 ) fell overboard and drowned.   Margaret proceeded on to Amwell, New Jersey where they intended to settle.

Margaret, shortly after her arrival and since her husband John ( 1 ) had passed away, married " George William Wambough " in ca. 1755 who appears to have been a widower with " 4 " children of his own.   George Wambough passed away in 1763 with his will being probated on August 15, 1763 and named his wife and 4 children, Henry, Mary, Elizabeth and Antoney Wambough as his heirs.

Margaret then married " Andrew Bearder " who had come to work on Mrs. Wambough's farm.   They were married in 1766 and had one son, Jacob Bearder, on January 6, 1768.

Margaret passed away on November 21, 1800 and was interred in the Larison's Corner Cemetery in Larison, New Jersey.   John Shepherd ( 1 ) and Margaret had 4 known children:

( 3 ) ~ John married " Margaret Kempel " daughter of Philip Kempel.   It is believed that they didn't have any children since his will, probated September 20, 1827, left his estate to his wife, $500.00 to his nephew Jacob who was the son of his brother Henry ( 4 ), and $133.33 to Elizabeth Johnson, wife of William Johnson and daughter of Elizabeth Maskell.

( 4 ) ~ Henry, as noted in his brother John's (3) will, was apparently married and had one son named Jacob.

( 5 ) ~ Peter was believed to have moved to Middlesex County.

Francis " Frank " ( 57 ) was born the 2nd child and 1st son of Daniel B. Blackwell and Harriet " Shepherd " Blackwell in September, 1848 in Hopewell Township, Mercer County, New Jersey.   He married Sarah A. " Sallie " Kitchen on September 3, 1881 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.   " Sallie " was born the daughter of Wilson and Mary Boss Kitchen in August, 1855 in New Jersey.

They first show up as a family in the 1885 New Jersey State Census ( Recorded: 1885 ) residing in a home in Hopewell Township, Mercer County, New Jersey.   " Frank " ( 57 ) is noted as being about 37 year old and " Sallie " is noted as about 30 year old.    They are noted as having " 2 " children under the age of 5 years:  Edward and Bessie May.

Sadly, most of the " 1890 census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire.

And to make matters worse they are not shown with a 1900 Federal Census as well.

Frances " Fannie " ( 62 ) was born the 2nd child and 2nd daughter of Josiah and Sarah Shepherd Baldwin ( 26 ) in January, 1845 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   She married " John C. Wisner ( Weasner ) " in 1862 in New Jersey and they settled near Hopewell, Mercer County, New Jersey after their marriage.

" John " was born July 15, 1839 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania the son of Charles Weasner and Harriet Parker Weasner.   " John ", during his lifetime, worked as a " Farmer " and he also served with Company D, New Jersey 3rd Regiment during the Civil War.   It was during the Civil War that " John C. Weasner ( Wisner ) " last name was changed to " John C. Wisner " and that was the last name he used from that point onward.

         They first show up as a family in the 1870 Federal Census ( Recorded: July 12, 1870 ) residing on a farm near Hopewell, New Jersey.   " John " is noted as being a 30 year old " Farmer " and " Fannie " ( 62 ) is noted as being a 25 year old " Homemaker " raising their " 3 " oldest children:    Ella ( age 6 )  ~  Anna ( age 4 )  ~  and Franklin ( age 1 ).

In 1872 sadness struck the young family when their son " Franklin L. Wisner " ( 92 ) passed away.   He was interred in the Pennington Cemetery, Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey.

In the 1885 New Jersey Census ( Recorded: April, 1885 ) they are still residing on a farm near Hopewell, New Jersey.   " John " is noted as being about a 35 year old " Farmer " and " Fannie " ( 62 ) is noted as being about a 30 year old " Homemaker " raising their " 5 " oldest children:    Ella V.  ~  Anna V.  ~  Josiah B.  ~  Charles V.  ~   and John H.          Sadly, most of the " 1890 census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire.

" John C. Wisner ( Weasner ) " preceded his wife in passing away on March 4, 1894 and he was interred in the Pennington Cemetery, Pennington, Mercer County, New Jersey.   More sadness struck the family when son " John H. B. Wisner " ( 95 ) passed away in 1897 and he was also interred in the Pennington Cemetery.

In the 1900 Federal Census ( Recorded: June 11, 1900 ) " Fannie Wisner " ( 62 ) is noted as being a 55 year old " Widow ", mother of " 8 " children of which only " 5 " were surviving, and the head of a family residing at 638 Benson Street, Camden, New Jersey.   There are " 12 " others living in her house with her to include the following:

Her daughter Ella B. Wisner Cadwallader ( 91 ) and her husband George S. Cadwallader who she married on October 27, 1886 in Hopewell   ~   Her son " Josiah B.          Andrew Bray Rittenhouse ( 70 ) was born the 1st child and 1st son of Dewitt Clinton Rittenhouse and Jane Aller Shepherd Rittenhouse ( 29 ) on August 22, 1859 near Sergeantsville, Hunterdon, New Jersey.   He was married twice.

He was married first to " Emma Lane Hockenbury " on January 22, 1879 in Lebanon, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   " Emma " was born on April 1, 1860 in Tewksbury, Hunterdon County, New Jersey the daughter of David and Susan Sutton Hockenbury.

The Federal Census of 1880 ( Recorded: June, 1880 ) shows Andrew ( 70 ), a teacher by profession, residing with his parents and " Emma Hockenbury Rittenhouse " residing with her parents.   Them not living together was more than likely due to " Emma " being pregnant, and close to delivery, with their first child George ( 100 ) which was common during those days.

Sadly, most of the " 1890 census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire.

         In the 1900 Federal Census ( Recorded: June 22, 1900 ) they are noted as residing in a home in Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   Andrew ( 70 ) is noted as being 40 years old and employed as an " Agent for a Wire Fence Company " and " Emma " is noted as a 41 year old " Homemaker " now raising all " 6 " of their children:  George ( Age 19 }  ~  Nellie ( Age 18 )  ~  Jennie ( Age 17 )  ~  Malvina ( Age 15 )  ~   Walter ( Age 13 )  ~  and Rufus ( Age 6 ) .   Also residing with them in 1900 is John D. Hoffman a 24 year old boarder.

In the 1910 Federal Census ( Recorded: April 30, 1910 ) they are still noted as residing in a home that they were " renting " in Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   Andrew ( 70 ) is noted as being 50 years old and now is " President (owner) of a Wire Fence Company " and " Emma " is noted as a 50 year old " Homemaker " raising her youngest son Rufus ( Age 16 ) .   " 2 " of their daughters are also still residing with them:  Jennie ( Age 27 ~ unemployed )  ~   and Malvina ( Age 25 ~ School Teacher ) .

Sadness struck the family on January 31, 1915 when " Emma Lane Hockenbury Rittenhouse " preceded her husband in passing away.   She was interred in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Andrew ( 70 ), now a widower, was married second in 1918 to " Angelina E. Divine Faulks " who was also a widow of James H. Faulks who had passed away in 1916.   " Angelina " was born the daughter of Michael William and Angelina Elizabeth Divine on January 31, 1861 in New York.   She also had " 3 " adult children:  Alice F., James Donald, and Walter Divine Faulks.

In the 1920 Federal Census ( Recorded: January, 1920 ) they are shown residing in a home on a farm that they owned mortgage free near Lebanon Villiage, Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   Based on all census data it appears that Andrew ( 70 ) sold his Wire Fence Company, " Angelina " sold the home that was left to her mortgage free by her late husband, and they both ended up purchasing this farm.

The 1920 Census notes that Andrew ( 70 ) is a 64 years old " Laborer " on their farm and " Angelina " is noted as a 57 year old " Homemaker ".   Also residing with them is " Angelina's " son Walter Divine Faulks who is noted as a single 23 year old " Farmer ".   Also residing with them is Alice F. Faulks Bowlby the 26 year old widowed daughter of " Angelina ", Harold V. Rittenhouse the 11 year old granson of Andrew ( 70 ), and Clara I. Divine Naughright the widowed 55 year old sister of " Angelina ".

From the year of 1926 through the year of 1933 Andrew ( 70 ) served as the first Mayor of the town of Lebanon, New Jersey.

In the 1930 Federal Census ( Recorded: April 10, 1930 ) they are shown residing in a home that they owned " mortgage free " on Cherry Street in Lebanon, Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   Andrew ( 70 ) is noted as being 70 years old and employed in a " Fencing Factory " and " Angelina " is noted as a 67 year old " Homemaker ".   Still residing with them is Alice F. Faulks Bowlby the 34 year old widowed daughter of " Angelina ".

Sadness again struck the family on January 12, 1936 when " Angelina E. Divine Rittenhouse " preceded her husband in passing away at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 12 days.   She was interred next to her first husband James in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, Union County, New Jersey.

In the 1940 Federal Census ( Recorded: April 4, 1940 ) Andrew ( 70 ), now age 80, is shown residing in a home that he owned " mortgage free " on Brunswick Avenue in Lebanon, Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   Also residing with him is his step-daughter Alice F. Faulks Bowlby the 46 year old widowed daughter of " Angelina ".

Sometime in 1942 Andrew ( 70 ), who was suffering from ill health, moved to Clinton, New Jersey to the home of his daughter Jennie Rittenhouse Leigh ( 102 ) and her husband Walter Scott Leigh.   He passed away there at the age of 85 years, 1 month, and 20 days.   Andrew ( 70 ) was interred next to his first wife " Emma Lane Hockenbury Rittenhouse " in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   Together he and " Emma " had " 6 " childten together.

In 1881 " George " started the Democrat Advertizer which later became the Hunterdon County Democrat newspaper.

Sadly, the first Federal Census they should have been noted in was the 1890 Federal Census.   However, most of the " 1890 census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire.

Sadness struck this young family on February 21, 1889 when their little daughter Stella Hughes ( 113 ) passed away at the age of 3 months and 14 days.   Stella was interred in the Stroudsburg Cemetery, Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

They first show up as a family in the Federal Census of 1900 ( Recorded: June 11, 1900 ) residing in a house they were renting on Pocono Street, Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.   " George " is noted as being a 37 year old " Editor " and Ella ( 71 ) is noted as a 37 year old " Homemaker " raising their " 7 " children:  Nivea B.
