Samuel Bacon ( 28 ) was born the 2nd child and 1st son of Daniel ( 22 ) and Martha Taylor Bacon in 1828 in Measham, Derbyshire, England.   At the age of 11, according to the census, he was listed as a coal miner like his father.   His brother Daniel, age 9, was also listed as a coal miner and they were at that time living in Wolverhampton, England.

In 1850 he married " Harriet Ward " who was born in December, 1832 in England.   Her parent's names are currently unknown.   In the year 1851 they were noted as living on Oxford Street in the parish of St. George, Wolverhampton.   However by 1861 they had moved to Bloxwich, near Walsall, where there was evidently more mining work.

In the 1871 census, Samuel ( 28 ) and his family had moved to the far north of England in County Durham.   It appears they may have been looking for a better life in the countryside, and this may be what inspired them to emigrate to America 15 years later.

In the 1881 census, however, they are noted living in Burtwood, Staffordshire.   Evidently it didn't work out for them in County Durham and they returned to this area for more work.

In the late 1880's they evidently decided that the best thing for them was moving to America to look for more mining work.   They are believed to have landed in Philadelphia in ca. 1888.

They moved to and resided in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania which was a coal mining town during that time.   They are both believed to have died there sometime between 1900 and 1910 since they don't either showup in the 1910 census.   Together they reportedly had twelve children.   Only six of their names are currently known.

After their marriage they resided in a stone home on Mechanic Street, across from the old Town Hall and Jail.   That house was demolished to widen Main Street in New Hope.   Her husband John, an unskilled laborer, had multiple jobs during his lifetime, the last being a guard at the bridge that ran over the Delaware River between New Hope and Lambertville, New Jersey.   John also served in World War I as a Private in the U.S. Army.   Winnie ( 72 ) worked cleaning people's homes & washing clothes to help make ends meet during their marriage.

Winnie ( 72 ) and her husband John moved from the above mentioned residence to a house next door, on the corner of Mechanic & Main Street ca. 1926.   The house that they moved to has since been torn down for the widening of Main Street.   They moved from there to a house directly across the street that was next to the Old Town Hall (on the Main Street Side) that has also since been torn down.   This home was the last home that John resided.

John died on September 18, 1944 at the age of 46 on the corner of Main & Bridge Streets in New Hope, of a Heart Attack.  He was interred in the Holcombe Riverview Cem., Lambertville, NJ.

Winnie ( 72 ) moved to Lambertville, New Jersey ca. October 1944, in a home across from her son Richard ( 112 ).  She then moved to a one bedroom apartment built for her over the garage of her daughter Margaret's ( 100 ) home by Margaret's husband Lewis Gorrell in New Hope where she lived until moving with Margaret ( 110 ) to Punta Gorda, Florida ca. 1974.

Winnie ( 72 ) died on October 18, 1983 at the age of 87 in Punta Gorda, Florida.  She was interred in the Charlotte Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda, however, she has a headstone in Holcombe Riverview Cemetery, Lambertville, New Jersey which shows her correct birth and death year.  This stone is along side of her husband John's.  Together they had 3 children.

Anna Emily Bacon ( 74 ) was born the 5th child and 4th and last daughter of William Bacon ( 36 ) and Anna Savina Whittich Bacon on November 15, 1902 near Buck Mountain, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.   She married " Edward Haas " in 1919 in Elkton, Maryland.   He was born the son of Charles and Mary Rohmer Haas on December 17, 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Haas ( Age 45 & a Carpenter ) and Mary Haas ( Age 43 ), his brothers Charles J. Haas, Jr. ( Age 23 & an accountant ), Joseph Haas ( Age 20 & a pipefitter ) and Francis ( Age 4 ).

During the 1920's sadness was a big part of their lives since their first born Catherine ( 112 ) passed away at the age of 7 in July, 1927 and their second child Edward ( 113 ) died at birth in 1922.

      In the 1930 census ( Recorded, April 11, 1930 ) they are shown renting a home at 729 Sylvan Street in Camden, Camden County, New Jersey.   " Edward " is noted as being 33 years old and working as a " Carpenter " and Anna ( 74 ) is noted as a 27 year old housekeeper raising their " 4 " children:  Marie ( Age 6 ) - Edward ( Age 4 ) - Martha ( Age 3 ) and Charles ( Age 1 ).

And then even more sadness erupted for this family .... Anna ( 74 ) preceded her husband in passing away on March 7, 1932 at the age of 29 and she was interred in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bellmaur, New Jersey.

Edward, like most men of his day, was unable to take care of four little children and he sent his children out to live with other family members until such time as he could get settled himself.

      Marie ( 116 ) ( Age 8 ) and Edward ( 117 ) ( Age 7 ) were sent to live with their Aunt Martha ( 70 ).   Martha ( 118 ) ( Age 5 ) was sent to live with her Aunt Winnie ( 72 ) in New Hope, Pennsylvania.   Charles ( 119 ) ( Age 3 ) was sent to live with his Uncle William ( 73 ) and Aunt Eletta.   When Charles' Uncle William ( 73 ) died in 1938 he was sent to live with his Aunt Martha ( 70 ).

How Lawrence "Larry"Jay Gorrell ( 154 ) died:

My Aunt lived in a house that is close to where the current post office is located in New Hope, Pennsyvania.    Her kitchen table sat infront of a large picture window where she would sit in the evenings drinking coffee and watching the traffic coming down the hill to the west of her home.

Her son Larry ( 154 ) was serving in the Navy in 1972.   He got off his ship in San Francisco, California for a 30 leave.   He first thought about getting a plane ticket back home but decided to go across country by bus and also by hitching a ride when he could so that he could see more of the U.S. and he phoned his Mom to let her know.

On the night of September 22, 1972 while sitting at her table she saw a car accident just after dark on the hill.   She called the accident into the police and reported that someone had run off the road and hit a telephone pole.   She watched as the fire trucks, ambulance, and tow truck came and walked down asking one of the firefighters there what had happened.   He told her that a man that was by himself had run off the road and hit the pole and he had hit and cut his head but would be alright.   She was relieved and went back home.

About 3 hours later, and after getting ready for bed, she glanced out the window and she noticed another ambulance appear at about the same area and she wasn't sure why but watched until it left.   About two hours later she was woken up by a phone call telling her that her son Larry ( 154 ) had been in a car wreck and that he was hurt and was at the hospital.   She went to the hospital and Larry ( 154 ) died not long after mid-night from his injuries.

As the night wore on she heard from the doctor that if it had not taken so long to get him to the hospital they may have been able to save him.   She asked the doctor what he meant and why did it take so long.   He stated that a man was in a car accident just west of New Hope and after he was brought to the hospital he asked, " How is the guy that was walking along the road that I hit? " .... The doctor, not knowing what he was talking about, requested that another ambulance go back to the scene to see what they could find.   They found Larry ( 154 ) about 30 foot away from where the car had hit him and the pole.   Margaret (100) was stunned .... she not only watched the accident but was within feet of her dying son .....
