Winnie Ann Bacon Pickett |
May 27, 1898 ~ October 18, 1983 ( Age 85 Years Old ) |
Winnie
" William Bacon ( 36 ) " and " Anna Savina Whittich Bacon "
on May 27, 1898
was born the 3rd child and 3rd daughter of :
near Buck Mountain,
Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
She married " John Earnest Pickett " on June 24, 1920 in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He was the son of " Jacob Dunlap Pickett " and " Eleanor Minerva Smith Pickett " and was born on December 3, 1897 in New Hope, Pennsylvania .....
" Winnie " met " John ", her future husband, when he walked into the " Carlos' Candy Store " located at 700 North 4th Street, Camden, New Jersey where she was working in January, 1920 ..... My Grandmother " Winnie " noted to me that the second time he came into the store she said to him " Are you back looking for more sweets again ? " and he replied " Actually I came back because the candy isn't the only sweet thing I noticed in this store ! " .....
After their marriage in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where " John " was originally from, they resided in a stone home on Mechanic Street, across from the old Town Hall and Jail. That house was demolished to widen Main Street in New Hope.
Her husband " John ", an unskilled laborer, had multiple jobs during his lifetime, the last being a guard at the bridge that ran over the Delaware River between New Hope and Lambertville, New Jersey.
" John " also served in World War I as a Private in the U.S. Army and was involved in two major battles. His name can be seen on the New Hope World War II monument on Main Street.
" Winnie " worked cleaning people's homes and washing clothes for others to help make ends meet during their marriage.
" Winnie " and her husband " John " moved from the above mentioned residence to a house next door, on the corner of Mechanic & Main Street ca. 1926. The house that they moved to has also since been torn down for the widening of Main Street. They moved from there to a house directly across the street that was next to the Old Town Hall (on the Main Street Side) that has also since been torn down. This home was the last home that " John " resided.
They first showup as a family in the 1930 Federal Census ( Recorded: April 9, 1930 ) residing at 221 Mechanic Street, New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania ( This home was torn down prior to 1940 ). " John " is noted as a 32 year old " Freight Hand " working on the " New Hope Railroad " and " Winnie " is noted as a 31 year old " Housekeeper " raising their children :
Margaret ~ ( Age 8 )
John E., Jr. ~ ( Age 5 )
and Richard ~ ( Age 3 )
Note: All three children were born in this home .....
In the 1940 Federal Census ( Recorded: April 3, 1940 ) they are now residing in a home that they " rented " on South Main Street, New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania ( This home has since been torn down ). Margaret ~ ( Age 18 )
John E., Jr. ~ ( Age 15 )
and Richard ~ ( Age 13 )
Also residing with them is " Winnie's " dad " William Bacon ( 36 ) " ~ ( Age 70 ) .
" Winnie's " husband " John ", who had not been feeling well since Saturday, September 16, 1944, had gone to see Dr. D. K. Lieby on Sunday the 17th. The Doctor apparently did not know what was wrong with " John " and advised him to return home and rest. He didn't stay home as advised by the doctor .....
At mid-night on Sunday " John " reported to his job as a guard on the New Hope ~ Lambertville bridge ( He was a guard on the Lambertville side ) . At 5:30 a.m. Monday morning September 18, 1944 a passerby found " John " on Bridge Steet near the bridge in New Hope passed out and apparently trying to go home since he was not feeling well.
Dr. Lieby was called and pronounced that " John Earnest Pickett, Sr. ", at the age of 46 years, 9 months and 15 days old, had died from a heart condition. His funeral was held at his home at 2:00 on Friday, September 22, 1944 with Rev. Ellsworth L. Jennings pastor of the New Hope Methodist Church officating and he was interred at the Riverview Cemetery in Lambertville, New Jersey.
Due to World War II only his daughter " Margaret " was able to attend his funeral. Both his son's, " John E., Jr. " and
" Richard ", were with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific.
" Winnie ", after her husband's passing, first moved to a home in Lambertville, New Jersey ca. October 1944, across the street from her son " Richard ". She then moved to a one bedroom apartment built for her over the garage of her daughter " Margaret's " home by Margaret's husband Lewis Gorrell in New Hope where she lived until moving with " Margaret " to Punta Gorda, Florida ca. 1974.
" Winifred "Winnie" Ann Bacon Pickett ( 72 ) " passed away on October 18, 1983 at the age of 85 years, 4 months, and 22 days old in Punta Gorda, Florida. She was interred in the Charlotte Memorial Gardens in Punta Gorda, however, she has a headstone in Holcombe Riverview Cemetery, Lambertville, New Jersey which shows her correct birth and death year. This stone is along side of her husband John's. Together they had 3 children :

My " Aunt Margaret " " suffered in a way that few wives and parents ever do " .....
First she endured her first husband " Lewis' " passing in 1962 .....
Then she also lost three of her sons as well :
" Billy ( at the Age of 20 in 1969 ) ...
" Johnny " ( at the Age of 27 in 1974 ) ...
and most painfully " Larry " ( at the Age of 24 in 1972 ) whose death she " unknowingly witnessed " !
Three sons lost within a 5 year period .....

After the passing of " Lewis " she then married " Arthur Samuel Meyer " who was born in 1901 in Pennsylvania. His parent's names are unknown.

" How Lawrence " Larry " Jay Gorrell ( 154 ) died : My Aunt lived in a house that is close to where the current post office is located in New Hope, Pennsyvania.
Her kitchen table sat infront of a large picture window where she would sit in the evenings drinking coffee and watching the traffic coming down the hill to the west of her home.
Her son " Larry " was serving in the Navy in 1972. He got off his ship in San Francisco, California for a 30 leave. He first thought about getting a plane ticket back home but decided to go across country by bus and also by hitching a ride when he could so that he could see more of the U.S. and he phoned his Mom to let her know.
On the night of September 22, 1972 while sitting at her table she saw a car accident just after dark on the hill. She called the accident into the police and reported that someone had run off the road and hit a telephone pole.
She watched as the fire trucks, ambulance, and tow truck came " and walked down asking one of the firefighters there what had happened. " He told her that a man that was by himself had run off the road and hit the pole and he had hit and cut his head but would be alright. " She was relieved that no one was seriously hurt and went back home ....."
About 3 hours later, and after getting ready for bed, she glanced out the window and she noticed another ambulance appear at about the same area and she wasn't sure why but watched until it left.
About two hours later she was woken up by a phone call telling her that her son " Larry " had been in a car wreck and that he was hurt and was at the hospital. She went to the hospital and " Larry " died not long after mid-night from his injuries.
As the night wore on she heard from the doctor that if it had not taken so long to get him to the hospital they may have been able to save him.
She asked the doctor what he meant and why did it take so long .....
He stated that a man was in a car accident just west of New Hope and after he was brought to the hospital he asked, " How is the guy that was walking along the road that I hit ? " .....
The doctor, not knowing what his patient was talking about, requested that another ambulance go back to the scene to see what they could find .....
" They found Larry about 30 foot away from where the car had hit him and the pole ! "
My Aunt Margaret was stunned .... she not only watched the accident but was within feet of her dying son .....
