He married " Mary ????? " who was born in ca. 1826 also in Ireland. Mary's parents' names and her surname is currently unknown ..... They first show up in the 1860 Federal Census ( recorded: July 20, 1860 ) residing in a home in Wilmington, Delaware and they have an personal estate value of $100.00. " Robert " is noted as a 30 year old " Laborer " and " Mary " is noted as a 35 year old homemaker raising their " 5 " oldest children :
" Robert ", due to the Civil War, on May 16, 1861 enlisted in the 1st Delaware Infantry for a 3 month term. Once his 3 month term with the 1st Delaware Infantry expired he enlisted in the " 2nd Delaware Infantry Regiment, Company H " on August 12, 1861. He signed up for a 3 year term which would have ended in August of 1864 however he re-enlisted for the duration of the war. With the " 2nd Delaware Infantry Regiment " he was involved in the following well known battles: Battle of Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Gettysburg, Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. The New Testament that " Robert " carried with him during the Civil War can be seen, by request, at the Delaware State Archives. It was donated by his granddaughter " Mary ( 19 ) ". An 1870 Federal Census has not been found for the family possibly due to " Mary " passing away in 1868. The children were possibly given to other family member to raise. " Mary " preceded her husband in passing away October 11, 1868 and was interred in the Old Swedes Church Cemetery, Wilmington, Delaware. The date of " Robert Hardy's ( 1 ) " passing and the place of his interment is currently unknown. They had " 6 " known children together who were all born in Wilmington, Delaware: 3. John Hardy ~ b. He married " Mary Carter McDowell " in 1876 and she was born the daughter of James McDowell and Elizabeth Everson McDowell in about 1853 in Wilmington, Delaware. They first show up as a family in the 1880 Federal Census ( recorded: June 15, 1880 ) residing in a home at 1007 West 8th Street, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. " John " was noted as being a 26 year old " Brick Mason " and " Mary " was noted as a 27 year old homemaker raising their first child John ~ ( Age 1 ) . Also residing with them was " Mary's " 60 year old widowed mother Elizabeth Everson McDowell. Sadly ... most of the " 1890 Federal Census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire. In the 1900 Federal Census ( recorded: June 4, 1900 ) they are residing in a rented home at 1017 Kirkwood Street also in Wilmington, Delaware. " John " was noted as being a 47 year old " Brick Mason " and " Mary " was noted as a 49 year old homemaker. All " 3 " of their children are residing with them :
" John Hardy ( 3 ) " preceded his wife in passed on February 19, 1901 at about the age of 47 years and it's currently unknown where he was interred. " Mary " was remarried after his passing to a Mr. Wilson. It is also unknown where she was interred. They had 3 known children: 11. Ada Mary Goodnow Hardy ~ b. August 18, 1881 ~ d. ( unknown ) ~ " Age unknown " 12. Joseph Blocksom Tyndall Hardy ~ b. November 19, 1883 ~ d. December 27, 1947 ~ " Age 64 years - 1 Month - 8 days " Family Notes : ~ ( other than any of those names color coded and in " italics " above )

William Thomas Hardy ( 4 ) was born the 3rd child and 2nd son of Robert Hardy ( 1 ) and " Mary ????? Hardy " on March 17, 1856 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. He was baptisted in the Old Swedes Church in Wilmington in July, 1855. The witnesses were William and Anne Beatty. " William " married " Eliza Rebecca Yost " in 1883. She was born the daughter of Zebulon and Mary Mitchell Yost in July 28, 1858 in Pennsylvania. Sadly ... most of the " 1890 Federal Census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire. They first show up as a family in the 1900 Federal Census ( recorded: June 4, 1900 ) residing in a home they were renting on Green Street, Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. " William " was noted as being a 44 year old " Brick Sorter " and " Eliza " was noted as a 41 year old homemaker raising their " 4 " oldest children :
" Eliza Rebecca Yost " had been been previously married and was a widow with " 3 " children when she married " William ". In the 1900 Federal Census ( recorded: June 4, 1900 ) she is noted as having had " 10 " children with only " 7 " surviving. At the time of the 1900 census " Eliza " had " 4 " known children with " William Hardy " that were surviving and also her widowed daughter " Lillie M. Collins " ( Age 20 ~ b. ca. 1880 ) was residing with them in 1900. Which would mean she had " 2 " other children that would be Lillie's siblings that are currently unknown. So the " 3 " children that didn't survive that " Eliza " had were more than likely " Hardy " children based on time and the noted births of the " 4 " oldest " Hardy " children shown below. In the 1910 Federal Census ( recorded: April 29, 1910 ) they are residing in the same home that they were renting in 1900 on Green Street, Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. " William " was noted as being a 54 year old " Brick Sorter " working in a " Brick Yard " and " Eliza " was noted as a 51 year old homemaker. All " 6 " of their children are residing with them :
In the 1920 Federal Census ( recorded: January 8, 1920 ) they are residing in a home that they were renting at 108 West Delaware Avenue, Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. " William " was noted as being a 63 year old " Laborer " working in a " Dye Mill " and " Eliza " was noted as a 61 year old homemaker. Residing with them are :
" William Thomas Hardy ( 4 ) " preceded his wife in passing away on July 4, 1922 at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 18 days and was interred in the Chester Rural Cemetery, Chester, Pennsylvania on July 7, 1922. " John Reed Nicholson Hardy ( 29 ) " was born the 5th child and 3rd and last son of Robert H. Hardy ( 7 ) and Ella David Hardy on January 4, 1900 on his parent's farm, known as the Logan Farm, near Kitts Hummock, Delaware. He was married three times. He first married " Pearle Emma Case " on December 4, 1920 in Wyoming, Delaware. She was born the daughter of Edward and Emma Salisbury Case on March 11, 1905 in Murderkill Hundreds, Delaware. They had " 7 " children together and were later divorced. Family Note: When I talked with " Mary Hardy Emery ( #30 ) ", " John's " sister, she noted to me that " Pearle " stated to her that her first name was indeed spelled with an " e " on the end of it but that few folks knew it and it bothered her. So " Mary ( #30 ) " said she always made sure when sending her cards that she put the " e " on the end of her name. " Great Sadness " struck the young family when on December 12, 1928 their son " Robert ( 51 ) " was born but only lived for a few hours due to birth complications. There are two family stories concerning where he was interred. One story notes he was interred on his Grandparent's farm noted as the Logan Farm near Kitt's Hummock. This first story " possibly " seems to be not true since his granddad Robert ( 7 ) had passed away 6 years earlier and his grandmother " Ella Hardy " left the farm soon after her husband's passing. The other story, according to his sister " Mary ( 30 ) ", notes that Robert ( 51 ) was interred either with his granddad Robert ( 7 ) or in his grandmother " Ella's " plot that was next to her husbands at the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Delaware. It's unknown which is true .... They first show up as a family in the 1930 Federal Census ( recorded: April 8, 1930 ) residing in a home they were renting on Main Street, Little Creek, Kent County, Delaware. " John " was noted as being a 30 year old " Waterman " working on a " Oyster boat " and " Pearle " was noted as a 26 year old homemaker raising their " 6 " children :
" Pearle " was pregnant with her son " Wilson Hardy ( 52 ) " at the time of the 1930 census and he was born 20 days later on April 28, 1930. However " Great Sadness " would once again grip the family as " Wilson " passed away 24 days later on May 22, 1930. " Wilson " is known to be interred in the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Delaware as it's noted on his death certificate ... but in which plot is currently unclear. Soon after the 1930 Federal Census " John " and " Pearle " were divorced. Together they had " 8 " children ..... " Pearle " was remarried to " Albert William Marker ", a widower, in December, 1934 in Elkton, Maryland. " Albert " was born on July 3, 1903 the son of Isaac Manship and Anna West Marker. After their marriage they resided in the Dover, Delaware area. " John " and " Pearle's " children were, at this time, turned over to the Children's Home in Wilmington by " Pearle ". The oldest child, " Catherine " ( 46 ), however was taken in and raised by " Pearle's " sister Maude Case Knight and her husband Edward Knight. Later, the other " 5 " Hardy children were soon moved to the Murphy Home in Dover, Delaware. " John ", for whom a 1940 census has not been found, after their divorce moved to Wilmington, Delaware with a lady named " Ella Brown " who worked as a waitress. " Ella " was, shortly after their relationship started, killed when she was struck by a car. " John " was married second to " Eleanor Pettyjohn " on December 25, 1944 in Wilmington, Delaware. " Eleanor Pettyjohn " was born the daughter of Linford and Frances Pettyjohn on January 5, 1920 in Lewes, Delaware. They were soon divorced and didn't have any children together. " John " later met and married " Helen ' Eloise ' McElroy " who was born in Alabama on April 2, 1927. They lived in Atlantic City, New Jersey for a few years where " 3 " of their children were born. While residing in Atlantic City " John " worked on ships in the Delaware Bay and in the ocean off of Atlantic City. They later moved to Florida and eventially lived in Hialeah, Florida where " John " once again worked as a " Waterman ". " John ", during World War II, served as a Merchant Marine which can be seen on his marriage license to " Eleanor Pettyjohn ". " John Reed Nicholson Hardy ( 29 ) " preceded his wife in passed away in Hialeah, Florida on September 28, 1974 at 2:30 pm in the Hialeah Hospital of Heart Failure. He was interred in the Vista Memorial Gardens in Dade County, Florida on October 1, 1974. His first wife " Pearle " passed away on November 4, 1943 and was interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, Delaware. At last report " Eloise " was still residing in Hialeah, Florida. " John " had " 8 " children with " Pearle " and " 5 " with " Eloise ". Children of John and Pearle Hardy : 45. Catherine Pearle Hardy ~ b. June 21, 1921 ~ d. " Mary Carter Hardy ( 30 ) " was born the 6th and last child and 3rd and last daughter of Robert H. Hardy ( 7 ) and Ella David Hardy on October 16, 1904 on her parent's farm ( the Logan Farm ) near Kitt's Hummock, Delaware. " Spry " was born the son of Edward and Laura Honey Emery on November 19, 1895 near Sudlersville, Maryland. After their marriage they resided in the Dover, Delaware area. A doll that was given to " Mary " by her aunt Mary Carter McDowell Hardy when she was 8 years old was donated by her to the Delaware Agricultural Museum in Dover, Delaware where it is on display. " Edgar 'Spry' Emery " preceded his wife in passing away on September 4, 1979 at the Kent General Hospital in Dover of an Aneurysm. He was interred next to his Father-in-law and Mother-in-law at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Delaware. She and her husband did not have any children. Note : Russ Pickett, the author of this family tree, spend sometime with " Mary " at her home south of Dover discussing her parent's, grandparent's, and her brother " John's " lives and information. She proved to be a very pleasant lady ... always wore a flower in hair .... and had a very pleasant smile. She was " very excited " that someone was writing down the information on her Hardy family ! It was such a pleasure to meet her and get to know her .... View online memorials For : ~ ( click on " highlighted names below " to see their personal burial record )
