Once his 3 month term with the 1st Delaware Infantry expired he enlisted in the " 2nd Delaware Infantry Regiment, Company H " on August 12, 1861. He signed up for a 3 year term which would have ended in August of 1864 however he re-enlisted for the duration of the war. With the " 2nd Delaware Infantry Regiment " he was involved in the following well known battles: Battle of Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Gettysburg, Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. The New Testament that Robert ( 1 ) carried with him during the Civil War can be seen, by request, at the Delaware State Archives. It was donated by his granddaughter Mary ( 19 ). An 1870 Federal Census has not been found for the family possibly due to " Mary " passing away in 1868. The children were possibly given to other family member to raise. He first married " Pearle Emma Case " on December 4, 1920 in Wyoming, Delaware. She was born the daughter of Edward and Emma Salisbury Case on March 11, 1905 in Murderkill Hundreds, Delaware. They had " 7 " children together and were later divorced. Family Note: When I talked with Mary Hardy Emery ( 30 ), John's ( 29 ) sister, she noted to me that " Pearle " stated to her that her first name was indeed spelled with an " e " on the end of it but that few folks knew it and it bothered her. So Mary ( 30 ) said she always made sure when sending her cards that she put the " e " on the end of her name. Sadness struck the young family when on December 12, 1928 their son Robert ( 51 ) was born but only lived for a few hours due to birth complications. There are two family stories concerning where he was interred. One story notes he was interred on his Grandparent's farm noted as the Logan Farm near Kitt's Hummock. This first story " possibly " seems to be not true since his granddad Robert ( 7 ) had passed away 6 years earlier and his grandmother " Ella Hardy " left the farm soon after her husband's passing. The other story, according to his sister Mary ( 30 ), notes that Robert ( 51 ) was interred either with his granddad Robert ( 7 ) or in his grandmother " Ella's " plot that was next to her husbands at the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Delaware. It's unknown which is true .... They first show up as a family in the 1930 Federal Census ( recorded: April 8, 1930 ) residing in a home they were renting on Main Street, Little Creek, Kent County, Delaware. John ( 29 ) was noted as being a 30 year old " Waterman " working on a " Oyster boat " and " Pearle " was noted as a 26 year old homemaker raising their " 6 " children: Catherine ( age 8 ) ~ John ( age 7 ) ~ Edward ( age 6 ) ~ Kenneth ( age 5 ) ~ Jane ( age 4 ) and Mary ( age 2 ) . " Pearle " was pregnant with her son Wilson ( 52 ) at the time of the 1930 census and he was born 20 days later on April 28, 1930. However sadness would once again grip the family as Wilson ( 52 ) passed away 24 days later on May 22, 1930. Wilson ( 52 ) is known to be interred in the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover, Delaware as it's noted on his death certificate ... but in which plot is currently unclear. Soon after the 1930 Federal Census John ( 29 ) and " Pearle " were divorced. Together they had " 8 " children. " Pearle " was remarried to " Albert William Marker ", a widower, in December, 1934 in Elkton, Maryland. " Albert " was born on July 3, 1903 the son of Isaac Manship and Anna West Marker. After their marriage they resided in the Dover, Delaware area. John ( 29 ) and " Pearle's " children were, at this time, turned over to the Children's Home in Wilmington by " Pearle ". The oldest child, " Catherine " ( 46 ), however was taken in and raised by " Pearle's " sister Maude Case Knight and her husband Edward Knight. Later, the other " 5 " Hardy children were soon moved to the Murphy Home in Dover, Delaware. After their divorce " Pearle " was remarried to " Albert W. Marker " and they resided in the Dover, Delaware area after their marriage. Her children were, at this time, turned over to the Children's Home in Wilmington by " Pearle ". The oldest child, " Catherine " ( 46 ), however was taken in by " Pearle's " sister Maude Case Knight and her husband Edward Knight. Later, the other " 5 " Hardy children were moved to the Murphy Home in Dover. John ( 29 ), for whom a 1940 census has not been found, after their divorce moved to Wilmington, Delaware with a lady named " Ella Brown " who worked as a waitress. " Ella " was, shortly after their relationship started, killed when she was struck by a car. John ( 29 ) was married second to " Eleanor Pettyjohn " on December 25, 1944 in Wilmington, Delaware. " Eleanor Pettyjohn " was born the daughter of Linford and Frances Pettyjohn on January 5, 1920 in Lewes, Delaware. They were soon divorced and didn't have any children together. John ( 29 ) later met and married " Helen ' Eloise ' McElroy " who was born in Alabama on April 2, 1927. They lived in Atlantic City, New Jersey for a few years where " 3 " of their children were born. While residing in Atlantic City John ( 29 ) worked on ships in the Delaware Bay and in the ocean off of Atlantic City. They later moved to Florida and eventially lived in Hialeah, Florida where John ( 29 ) once again worked as a " Waterman ". John ( 29 ), during World War II, served as a Merchant Marine which can be seen on his marriage license to " Eleanor Pettyjohn ". John ( 29 ) preceded his wife in passed away in Hialeah, Florida on September 28, 1974 at 2:30 pm in the Hialeah Hospital of Heart Failure. He was interred in the Vista Memorial Gardens in Dade County, Florida on October 1, 1974. His first wife " Pearle " passed away on November 4, 1943 and was interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, Delaware. At last report " Eloise " was still residing in Hialeah, Florida. John ( 29 ) had " 8 " children with " Pearle " and " 5 " with " Eloise ".
