Remember :
He married " Elizabeth Dunlap " on October 4, 1806 in Salem County, New Jersey. She was born the daughter of " Edward Dunlap & Mary Parret Dunlap ". The date of her birth is currently unknown. Together they had one known child but more than likely there were more.
Was born in 1807 in Pelesgrove Township, Salem County, New Jersey the son of : " William Pickett ( 1 ) " and " Elizabeth Dunlap Pickett "
" Edward " first shows up in the New Hope, Pennsylvania area possibly residing between Lumberville and New Hope in the 1840 census ( which notes his birth and that of his wife's in New Jersey ). In 1828 he married " Catharine Conver " who was born on October 5, 1809 in New Jersey the daughter of " Peter Conver " and " Elizabeth Remer Conver Strawn ". " Edward " apparently came to this area to use his skills as a carpenter / boat builder to build boats to be used on the newly completed Delaware Canal ( completed in 1832 ) that was a 60 mile long canal that connected Bristol, Pa. to Easton, Pa. where it connected with the Lehigh Canal. " Edward " soon became one of the most successful canal boat builders in the area. In the 1850 Federal Census ( recorded October 1, 1850 ) " Edward " is noted as a 43 year old " Shipwright " with a real estate value of $3,000.00 and his wife Catharine was noted as a 38 year old housekeeper and they were still residing somewhere between Lumberville and New Hope, Pa. " A Shipwright is a carpenter skilled in ship construction and repair ". It would also appear based on the 1850 census that possibly " 2 " of " Edward's " neighbors were working for him since neither of them had any real estate value: James Crothers ( age 45 ) who was also noted as a " Shipwright " and George W. Wilson ( age 32 ) noted as a " ship carpenter ".
Prior to the 1860 Federal Census : " Elizabeth Dunlap Pickett " married " Theophilus Stout " on May 6, 1852 and moved out on her own " William P. Pickett " married " Phoebe Maria Kitchen " on March 7, 1854 and also moved out on his own. In the 1860 Federal Census ( Recorded: July 9, 1860 ) " Edward " is noted as a 54 year old " Boat Builder " with a real estate value of $8,000.00 and a personal estate value of $700.00 and his wife Catharine was noted as a 53 year old housekeeper and they are still noted as having a post office address of Lumberville, Pa. and were still residing near New Hope, Pa. Residing with them are " 6 " of their children :
Prior to the 1870 Federal Census : " Mary Ann Pickett " married " William Allen Dobbins " in 1870 and moved out on her own. " Jacob Pickett " married " Clarissa H. Saxton " and also moved out on his own
" John S. Pickett " married " Louisa Jane Everitt " on October 3, 1866 and also moved out on his own
" Isabella Pickett " married " John C. Holcombe " in 1868 and also moved out on her own. In the 1880 Federal Census ( Recorded: June 3, 1880 ) " Edward " is noted as being 73 years old and noted as a widower and is shown still residing in his home on South Main Street, New Hope, Pennsylvania with his son " Joseph " and his first wife " Emma ". " Edward Dunlap Pickett ( 2 ) " passed away on Friday, October 12, 1888 in his home on South Main Street, New Hope, Pennsylvania. He was interred in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Lambertville, New Jersey on Tuesday, October 16, 1888 beside his wife. He was 81 years old at the time of his death. Residing next door was his son " Jacob " and his wife " Clarrisa ". During " Edward's " lifetime he was employed as a Ship Builder. According to his estate settlement he eventually owned his own " Boat Yard Lot " in New Hope which is believe to have been on the canal between South Main and New Streets. His business must have been profitable since he not only owned his own Boat Yard ( which comprised three separate lots ) but also four houses and three other lots. He and his wife " Catharine " had " 8 " children together: 4. William P. Pickett ~ born: January 8, 1834 ~ died: July 5, 1904 ~ " Age: 70 years ~ 5 months ~ 28 days old " 5. " Theophilus " is noted as a 33 year old " Master Carpenter " and " Elizabeth " is noted as a 28 year old housekeeper raising their only daughter :
It is unknown why their daughter " Ida ", who had been born only 8 days earlier, was not living with the family. Quite possibly " Elizabeth " had trouble with her delivery and either her mother or mother-in-law was caring for " Ida " to help out. In the 1870 Federal Census ( Recorded: June 29, 1870 ) they are still residing in Lambertville, New Jersey and they are shown now with no real estate value and a personal estate value of $200.00. In the late 1880's through the early 1890's, after the passing of his wife " Emma ", " Joseph " ran a " shooting gallery " at the Neshaminy Falls Grove, then a well known amusement park, on the Neshaminy, just a few miles above Hulmeville. It is believed that this is where he met his wife " Emily ". He was also known to often run concession stands at multiple fairs and parks around the county until his marriage. After his second marriage and the settlement of his dad's estate he led a more stay-at-home life. His brother's and sister's purchased home's and " Joseph " inherited some money, of an unknown amount, from their dad Edward's Estate.
Sadly ..... most of the " 1890 Federal Census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire. In the 1900 Federal Census ( Recorded: June 5, 1900 ) " Joseph " ~ ( Age 52 ) and " Emily " ~ ( Age 51 ) are shown residing in a rented home, the left side of a townhouse, and running a " Notion Store " in the front of this home on Mechanic Street next to the canal in New Hope.
The store, with a home attached, ( as of 2024 ) is still in operation as another type of store. It is " a known fact " that
Between the 1900 and 1910 census " Joseph " ~ ( abt. the Age of 55 ) became a " Storekeeper ", on his own account, selling
It was in the back room of this store on Bridge Street that " Joseph ", at about the age of 55, started his paintings. He first started painting, without ever having a lesson, using house paints mixed with sand and plywood wrapped with " Heavy Muslin " from his store's supplies. In the 1910 Federal Census ( Recorded: April 15, 1910 ) " Joseph " ~ ( Age 62 ) and " Emily " ~ ( Age 62 ) are still shown residing in the same rented home on Mechanic Street. " Joseph " is noted as merchant working on his own account in his " Hardware Store " on Bridge Street. " Emily " is noted as a homekeeper. It is believed, and noted by some family members, that " Joseph " prior to his passing ended up hiring his great-niece's " Selma's ( 51 ) " husband " William Edwin Cryer " to help out in his " Hardware Store " which is noted in other census data ..... In 1918, prior to his passing, " Joseph " sent one of his paintings to the annual exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and it received three jury votes, including a vote from the well known artist " Robert Henri ". Since " Joseph " passed away late in 1918 he was never able to send anymore of his paintings to exhibitions. It wasn't until the 1930's that his work really began to receive general recognition. " Joseph's " paintings now hang in the New York Museum of Modern Art in New York City, & the Newark Museum in Newark, NJ. His most famous painting is that of " Manchester Valley " ( " See Appendix B " - click here ) which is a painting of the old New Hope High School. During 1990, it was brought to my attention that a " study " of this painting was being sold by an art gallery in New York City. I believe that " Joseph ", being an untrained artist, would have never made a study & therefore feel this to be a fake. The selling price was over $100,000.00. The titles of the other paintings that the author is sure are his works include " Coryell's Ferry " and " Washington under the Council Tree ". It is also " possible " that the work titled " Houses by a stream, Lambertville " is one of his paintings however I'd have to see the original to be sure .... Other paintings that have surfaced that are claimed to be his work include " Red House on the Hill ", " Houses by a stream Lambertville ", and " Sunset on the Lehigh Canal, New Hope ". These two have not, as yet, been verified to the satisfaction of the author as " Joseph's " originals. " Joseph Pickett ( 9 ) " passed away on December 12, 1918 at the age of 70 years, 8 months, and 16 days in New Hope, Pennsylvania and his funeral was held in New Hope, with interment on December 17, 1918 in the Hulmeville Cemetery in Hulmeville, Pennsylvania. His wife, Emily, died in 1929 at the age of 81 and was interred next to her husband. They also have a footstone on their grave. There is no known photograph of Joseph, however he and his brother " John S. Pickett ( 8 )" were said to look just like twins. A photo of " John " ( 8 ) is shown above. " Joseph " and Emily never had any children. To read the story :

( 194 ) ~ Lawrence " Larry " Jay Gorrell was killed when a car left the road and hit him while he walking on the shoulder.
My Aunt lived in a house that is close to where the current post office is located in New Hope, Pennsyvania.
Her kitchen table sat infront of a large picture window where she would sit in the evenings drinking coffee and watching the traffic coming down the hill to the west of her home.
Her son " Larry " was serving in the Navy in 1972. He got off his ship in San Francisco, California for a 30 leave. He first thought about getting a plane ticket back home but decided to go across country by bus and also by hitching a ride when he could so that he could see more of the U.S. and he phoned his Mom to let her know.
On the night of September 22, 1972 while sitting at her table she saw a car accident just after dark on the hill. She called the accident into the police and reported that someone had run off the road and hit a telephone pole. She watched as the fire trucks, ambulance, and tow truck came and walked down asking one of the firefighters there what had happened. He told her that a man that was by himself had run off the road and hit the pole and he had hit and cut his head but would be alright. She was relieved and went back home.
About 3 hours later, and after getting ready for bed, she glanced out the window and she noticed another ambulance appear at about the same area and she wasn't sure why but watched until it left. About two hours later she was woken up by a phone call telling her that her son " Larry " had been in a car wreck and that he was hurt and was at the hospital. She went to the hospital and " Larry " died not long after mid-night from his injuries.
As the night wore on she heard from the doctor that if it had not taken so long to get him to the hospital they may have been able to save him. She asked the doctor what he meant and why did it take so long. He stated that a man was in a car accident just west of New Hope and after he was brought to the hospital he asked, " How is the guy that was walking along the road that I hit? " .... The doctor, not knowing what he was talking about, requested that another ambulance go back to the scene to see what they could find. They found " Lawrence 'Larry' Jay Gorrell ( 154 ) " about 30 foot away from where the car had hit him and the pole.
" Margaret " was stunned .... she not only watched the accident but was within feet of her dying son ..... ( All below lettering in " Bright Blue " are clickable links and will open on a new page ! ) ( See the " Stout Family History " also created by " Russ Pickett " for more on that family ! ) " Russ' " life has been effected by having " Autism " ..... suffering a " severe heart attack " ..... being diagnosed with " Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( P. T. S. D. ) " ( Due to my firefighting and E.M.T. service ) ..... Bell's Palsy ..... Psoriatic Arthritis ..... but the worst effect on my life was the death of my first born child " Christopher Scott Pickett " on April 4, 2021 who was only 45 years old ( His mother and I found him in his Baltimore, Maryland apartment 3 days after his passing ) ..... But by the grace of God my Heavenly Father I'm still here in " 2024 " ! " This diagnoses explains so much about my past " .... And why I've always had a difficult time making friends and having relationships with others .... " and why so many people in my past have done their best to simply avoid me " .... however it also explains why I've been able to excel in so many parts of my life .....
" Russ " grew up in Odessa, Delaware and attended 1st grade in what is now known as the " Old Academy " for the first half of the year and that building is currently across from the Odessa Post Office on Main Street. He then attended the new " Odessa Elementary School " for the second half of that year through 6th grade ( currently an office building - 2024 ) For 7th grade he attended St. Edmond's Academy in Wilmingtown, Delaware. " Russ " then attended Middletown High School for 8th grade until he graduated in 1969. " Russ " has been married twice. Grewing up in the little historic town of Odessa, Delaware " Russ " quickly became interested in the old historic buildings. He found out at about the age of 11 that if you lived in Odessa, at least at that time, you could go through any of the historic museum's for free ... something he took advantage of at least weekly in the summers. His favorite, of course, was the Corbit-Sharp House. And to make it even better ... he knew the ladies that ran the tours. One of the ladies was Mrs. Lou Haas who actually came and played bridge with his parents every Sunday night for many years.
One day when " Russ " was 13 years old he was again at the house walking around when Mrs. Haas said to him, " We need you for a little bit. " " Russ " followed her to the front door and she said, " There is a bus of 40 senior citizens outside that want to tour the house and you are going to give some of them the tour .... there just too many for us to do them. " So " Russ " gave two groups of them a tour through the house. The older folks, of course, thought it was cute and liked asking questions to this young man. At the end of one of the tours that he gave a man said to Mrs. Haas, " Every question we asked about the home this young man knew the answers. " Mrs. Haas replied with a laugh, " I think he actually knows more about the house than I do ... " " Russ " has gone through his life with a love of history more than likely due to him growing up in Odessa ... whether its Odessa History, Delaware History, U.S. History, World History, Biblical History, or any history ... He has created " over a thousand webpages on this site about history ! ". " Russ " was first married to " Diane Sue Collison " on November 6, 1971 in St. Luke's Methodist Church in Denton, Maryland. Sam also would take me crabbing, Muskrat trapping, and sturgeon fishing with him ..... His second job was working fulltime in Johnson's " Auto Treat " when I turned 16 years old. He worked there from May, 1968 thru September, 1969 ..... " Russ' " third job started when he was 17 years old ... He worked for the State of Delaware as a Computer Project Leader from September, 1969 through 2005 when he retired after " 35 years of service " ..... He then became a part time school bus driver with the " Hilton Bus Service " in Camden, Delaware for two years when he suffered a " Heart Attack " in " 2007 " ..... when the doctor talked with his wife in the hospital he noted to her, " You should know that your husband's Heart Attack is pretty severe ... you should say to him what ever you need to say ! " ... But I survived ... and still here and kicking in " 2024 " ! " Russ " then, against the doctor's advice, drove a concrete truck with " Pioneer Concrete " of Cheswold, Delaware for the next 3 1/2 years. " Russ " then worked as a driver for Westminster Village in Dover, Delaware for 4 years and " went into fulltime retirement on December 7, 2013 ".
