The earliest known member of my Mettler (Metler) family tree is my Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather "Johann George Mettler (1)" who was born in April 2, 1696 presumably in Holland.   Efforts to establish who his parents were have been futile up to this point .....

For ease of identification within this document each family member has a number that is referenced through this entire document.   That is, "Johann" is number (1), since he is the oldest known family member, his first child Marie is number (2), his 2nd child Johann is number (3), and so on .....

  • Numeric value is assigned with the lowest number being the oldest family members and the highest numbers being the youngest family members.

  • All women's maiden names, if known, are in " Italics ".

  • Family members names shown in " Maroon " are the direct ancestors of Russell S. Pickett and my children : Christorpher, Ryan, Kayla and Kara Pickett.

  • Children's names shown in " Dark Blue " and in " Italics " have their own paragragh.   The others, due to a lack of information, do not and are shown in " Black " without " Italics ".

  • Names shown below in " Purple " have married a Mettler Family Member.

  • All words and names shown in " Bright Blue " are clickable links.

  • A " " shown in front of an " Online Memorial Link " means that there is a photo of their headstone on the link.

  • A " " shown in front of an " Online Memorial Link " means that there is a photo of the person or family members on the link.

  • A " (N) " shown in front of an " Online Memorial Link " means there is no headstone photo shown.

  • Within this document I use the "Find A Grave" website which links to where each family member who has passed away is interred and shows their individual online memorial.   If you'd like to access the "Find A Grave" site to learn more about this project and build memorials for your loved ones please click below :

Dewitt Clinton Rittenhouse
( 107 )

Dewitt Clinton Rittenhouse ( 107 ) was born on October 11, 1836 in New Jersey the son of " Andrew Bray & Elizabeth " Mettler " Rittenhouse ".

He married " Jane Aller Shepherd " in 1858.   She was born the 1st child and 1st daughter of John Shepherd, II and Sarah Aller Shepherd on April 14, 1836 New Jersey.
( Jane is #29 in my " Shepherd Family History " )

After their marriage they first resided in Delaware Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey where " Dewitt " worked as a Farmer and " Jane ", of course, as a farmers wife.

Sadly ... most of the " 1890 Federal Census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire.   Also a " 1900 & 1910 Federal Census " has not, as of yet, been found for this family.

" Jane Aller Shepherd Rittenhouse " preceded her husband in passing on December 3, 1908 at the age of 72 years, 7 months, 19 days and was interred in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, New Jersey.

The Federal Census of 1880 ( Recorded: June, 1880 ) shows " Andrew ", a teacher by profession, residing with his parents and
" Emma Hockenbury Rittenhouse " residing with her parents.   Them not living together was more than likely due to " Emma " being pregnant, and close to delivery, with their first child " George ( 150 ) " which was common during those days.

Sadly ... most of the " 1890 Federal Census " materials were destroyed in a 1921 fire and none of the information for the State's of New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania or Delaware survived the fire.

In the 1900 Federal Census ( Recorded: June 22, 1900 ) they are noted as residing in a home in Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.   " Andrew " is noted as being 40 years old and employed as an " Agent for a Wire Fence Company " and " Emma " is noted as a 41 year old " Homemaker " now raising all " 6 " of their children :
