.....

This is a recipe that I had from years ago ( not sure where it came from ) ..... but I had to turn it into a " Slow Cooker " meal .... And I only made a few tweaks and changes to this old recipe because it was already one heck of a " Delicious Meal " !

Back in the 1950's and 60's it was a very common recipe for many families ..... including mine ..... and was served in many restaurants as well ..... But over the years it somehow become a " Forgotten Recipe " !

Historically " Sloppy Joe's ", according to many food historians, dates back to the 1930's.   It was invented by a cook named Joe in a Sioux City, Iowa cafe as a loose meat sandwich.

By the 1940's it was mentioned in many cookbooks and food columns in newspapers.   By 1969 the " Manwich Sauce " came into production by ConAgra and Hunts.   It was used by many, including myself in making a sloppy Joe sandwich.

So here it is and if you've never had it before :

Ingredients:

  •   2  ~  teaspoon's of canola / vegetable oil ~ ( for cooking the burger )

  •   1 1/2  ~  pounds of hamburger  ~  ( See Tip #1 below for optional meats to use )

  •   2  ~  8 oz. can of " Tomato Sauce " .....

  •   1/2  ~  teaspoon of Garlic Powder .....

  •   1/2  ~  cup of finely diced onion .....   ~  ( I like to use " Shallots " ~ but other types will work just fine )

    Note :
I like using my Pickled Onions
for this recipe when I alreay have some made !
To see my " Pickled Onion " recipe .....

  •   1/4  ~  cup of diced green or red sweet peppers  ~  ( " Optional " ~ but better with )

  •   2  ~  Tablespoons of packed granulated Brown Sugar .....

  •   2  ~  teaspoons of Worcestershire Sauce .....

  •   2  ~  teaspoons of Red Wine or Apple Cider vinegar  ~  ( " Optional " ~ but better with )

  •   1/2  ~  cup of your favorite Ketchup .....

  •   Salt & Pepper to your taste .....

  •   Hamburger " or " Hot Dog Rolls .....  ~  ( See Tip #2 below for a suggestion concerning rolls for this meal )
( " Hot Dog Rolls " ~ are best used for little kids to avoid the " Sloppy Eating " )

  •   Sour Cream .....  ~  ( " Optional " ..... " OH YEAH " .... I like sour cream on my Sloppy Joe's !!! )

Directions:

  1.   Heat the oil in a large pan over medium high heat .....

  2.   Place the ground beef ( or meat of choice ), onion & green pepper in the pan and season with salt and pepper to taste .....

  3.   Cook for about 10 minutes, breaking up the meat with a spatula, or until browned .....

  4.   Then place the beef and onion mixture in the slow cooker .....

  5.   Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and vinegar .....

  6.   Stir well to combine the ingredients .....

  7.   Cover and cook on " HIGH " for 3 hours or " LOW " for 6 hours .....
( I like to cook my sloppy joe's 6 hours on low )

  8.   When it's done ..... spoon your sloppy joe's on your buns and then .....

The first time you make this I'd suggest using Ground Burger ..... However ....." Ground Turkey, Ground Chicken, " or  ~  for an italian taste  ~  " Ground Italian Sausage " is also very good ....

I normally " toast " or " grill " my rolls to make this meal a little less " Sloppy " ..... I have a Toaster / Bagel combo toaster that I toast the hamburger rolls in ..... You can also just as easily stick your rolls under your broiler in your oven as well if you like this option of having your rolls toasted .....
