( Originally created in June, 2014 )
The " S.S. Jean Nicolet " was a Liberty ship built in Portland, Oregon in October 1943. It was operated by the Oliver J. Olson Company of San Francisco and was under the command of Master / Captain " David Martin Nilsson " of Oakland, California. On July 2, 1944 the " S.S. Jean Nicolet " was steaming alone in the Indian Ocean loaded with a cargo of war materials for the China / Burma / India theatre of war. They were sailing from San Pedro, California bound for Colombo, Ceylon.
On board was a complement of " 100 " men consisting of " 41 " Merchant Crewman, " 28 " Naval Armed Guard, and " 31 " passengers. The passenger list was made up of " 6 " U.S. Army officers, " 12 " U.S. Army enlisted men, " 8 " Navy technicians, " 4 " civilians, and " 1 " U.S. Army medical corpsman.
Approximately 700 miles south of Ceylon
the " S.S. Jean Nicolet "
was struck and disabled by two torpedoes
fired from the " Japanese submarine I-8 ".The submarine then surfaced, took all the survivors they could find on board, and then went about " executing " and " murdering " all of them that they could.....
The total lost was " 76 " men including: " 31 " Merchant Mariners ~ " 17 " U.S. Army Personel
" 18 " U.S. Navy Armed Guards = " 7 " U.S. Navy Citizen Personel and
" 3 " Civilian Passengers
( Their remains were never recovered )
The remaining 24:
" 5 "
including Master Nilsson,
were kept on the Japanese submarine and all " 5 " became POW's.Only " 1 " of the " 5 "
" Francis J. O'Gara "
War Shipping Administration representative survived the war !The remaining " 19 " were picked up in a lifeboat by the British Ship HMS Hoxa 30 hours later.
