The " U.S.S. Bristol ( DD-453 ) " was a Gleaves-class destroyer of the United States Navy, and was the first ship of two named for Rear Admiral Mark Lambert Bristol. The second ship named " Bristol " was the " U.S.S. Bristol ( DD-857 ) " that was commissioned on March 17, 1945.The " U.S.S. Bristol ( DD-453 ) " was built by Federal Shipbuilding, Kearny, New Jersey and launched on July 25, 1941. The destroyer was commissioned on October 22, 1941 with Lieutenant Commander C. C. Wood in command.
The " Bristol ", during her first year of service, operated as a patrol and convoy escort in the North Atlantic, making several trans-Atlantic voyages to Ireland. On September 22, 1942, Cmdr John Albert Glick took over command of the ship and a month later on October 24, 1942, she made her first voyage to North Africa, as part of the " Operation Torch Landings "
at Fedala, French Morocco.Returning to the United States in late November, she operated out of Norfolk, Virginia until January 14, 1943, when she again steamed to the Mediterranean where, with the exception of one trip to the Panama Canal Zone in April 1943, she served exclusively until October 13, 1943.
On October 13, 1943, while escorting a convoy to Oran, Algeria, the " Bristol " was struck on the port side at the forward engine room by a single torpedo from German U-boat U-371. The Bristol was broken in half by the single explosion. No fires resulted, but steam, electrical power, and communications were lost and the ship had to be abandoned. Eight minutes after the explosion the aft section sank, followed four minutes later by the foreparts. The Bristol suffered the loss of 52 of her crew. The survivors were rescued by the destroyers U.S.S. Trippe (DD-403) and the U.S.S. Wainwright (DD-419).
The Commander of the Bristol, who survived the sinking, was: The following below list was created in the memory of those who "Gave Their All" on the U.S.S. Bristol.
