( All wording in " BRIGHT BLUE " within this document are clickable links ! )
" August 27, 2023 "
The " U.S.S. Luce ( DD-522 ) " was a Fletcher-class destroyer and was the second of three ships of the United States Navy to be named for " Rear Admiral Stephen Bleecker Luce " (1827 - 1917). The " Luce " was built by Bethlehem Mariners Harbor, Staten Island and was laid down on August 24, 1942 and was launched on March 6, 1943.
The " Luce ", after being commissioned on June 21, 1943, left New York City on September 1, 1943 and sailed to Bremerton, Washington. The " Luce " was then assigned as the plane guard for the " Enterprise ( CV-6 ) ", which was it's first official duty, on it's trip to Pearl Harbor on November 1, 1943.
The sinking of the
" U.S.S. Luce ( DD-522 ) "
On 24 March 1945 the " Luce " departed Leyte escorting and screening units of TF 51 which landed heavy artillery on Kelse Shima for the support of the main landings on Okinawa. She was detached from this duty April 1st and assigned radar picket duty off Kerama Retto.
About 07:40, May 4, 1945, Japanese kamikaze ( suicide ) planes were intercepted by the combat air patrol in the vicinity of the " Luce ". Two enemy planes avoided the interceptors and attacked the " Luce " from the portside. The " Luce " shot down one, but the explosion from the bomb it carried caused a power failure.
Unable to bring her guns to bear in time, the " Luce " was struck in the aft section by the second kamikaze. The port engine was knocked out, engineering spaces flooded, and the rudder jammed.
At 08:14 the " Luce " took a heavy list to starboard and the order to abandon ship was passed. Moments later she slid beneath the surface in a violent explosion carrying " 141 " of her 312 officers and men with her.
The following below listing was created in the memory of those that SERVED ON " AND " those who " GAVE THEIR ALL " on the " U.S.S. Luce ( DD-522 ) ".
There are personal " Online Memorials " for each of these honored men that were created for them by using the " Find A Grave Website ". On the " Majority " of the online memorials you will see a small biography for each soldier which may include:
Parent's, Grandparent's & Sibling's Names,
where & when they were born,
where they grew up,
when & where they enlisted in the service,
the military unit they were part of,
" AND "
where and how they actually died during the war !
