The below listing ( which is always in progress )
will display all the sailors on the Laffey on April 16, 1945 ! "
To include those:
"Killed In Action", "Missing In Action", "Wounded In Action",
and the survivors of the attack as well !
( All wording in " BRIGHT BLUE " within this document are clickable links ! )
The " U.S.S. Laffey ( DD-724 ) " was a Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer built at Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine. She was laid down June 28, 1943, launced November 21, 1943, and commissioned on February 8, 1944. She was named after " Seaman Bartlett Laffey " ( Civil War Medal Of Honor recipient ) who had one other ship named in his honor the " U.S.S. Laffey ( DD-459 ) that was sunk in the " Naval Battle of Guadalcanal " on November 13, 1942.
The " U.S.S. Laffey ( DD-724 ) " after being commissioned on February 8, 1944, and with her crew fully trained, was ready for service on February 28, 1944. Their first war assignment was the screening of a convoy from New York City bound for England on May 14, 1944.
After arriving in England with the convey the " U.S.S. Laffey ", on June 3, 1944, was assigned as part of the D-Day Invasion of France. She headed for the Normandy beaches escorting tugs, landing craft, and two Dutch gunboats. The group arrived in the assault area, off Utah beach, Baie de la Seine, France, at dawn on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
On June 6 - 7, 1944 the " U.S.S. Laffey " was assigned to screen seaward. On June 8-9 she successfully bombarded gun emplacements on the coastal areas of France. On June 12, 1944 she pursued enemy E-boats that had torpedoed the destroyer " U.S.S. Nelson ( DD-623 )" . The " U.S.S. Laffey " was able to break up their tight formation thus preventing further attacks from the group. Her screening duties completed, the " U.S.S. Laffey " returned to England, arriving at Portsmouth on June 22, 1944.
On June 25, 1944 the " U.S.S. Laffey " got underway with the battleship " U.S.S. Nevada ( BB-36 ) " to join Bombardment Group 2 shelling the formidable defenses at Cherbourg-Octeville. During this bombardment the " U.S.S. Laffey " was hit above the waterline by a ricocheting shell, but it failed to explode and did little damage.
The " U.S.S. Laffey " shortly returned to the U.S. arriving in Boston, Massachusetts on July 9, 1944 where she was overhauled and given new electronic equipment. On August 26, 1944 she was sent to Hawaii and arrived at Pearl Harbor in September of 1944. After multiple assignments in the Pacific area in and around the Philippines the " U.S.S. Laffey " was eventually to become part of the Invasion of Okinawa with Task Force 54 ( TF 54 ).
The Attack on April 16, 1945 ! The " U.S.S. Laffey " was assigned to radar picket station 1 about 30 miles north of Okinawa and joined in repulsing an air attack which downed 13 enemy aircraft. The Japanese then launched another air attack with some 50 planes ! During this attack, however, the " U.S.S. Laffey " was badly damaged by " four bombs, six kamikaze crashes, and strafing fire that killed 32 and wounded 71 ". And still the " U.S.S. Laffey " survived the attack!

Today the " U.S.S. Laffy ( DD-724 ) " is a museum ship, along with the " U.S.S. Yorktown ( CV-10 ) ", at " Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum ", Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The following below listing was created in the memory of those that SERVED ON " AND " those who " GAVE THEIR ALL " on the " U.S.S. Laffey ". There are personal "online memorials" for each of these honored men that were created for them by using the "Find A Grave" website. You will see a blue " Yes " behind their names and by clicking on the " Yes " you will see a personal memorial that has been created for them by myself or someone else.
