The " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " was a " Q-ship " of the United States Navy named for al-Atik, a double star in the constellation Perseus. Her twin sister ship was " U.S.S. Asterion ( AK-100 ) ".
The " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " was originally built as the " S.S. Carolyn " and was a steel-hulled, single-screw steamer. The ship was laid down on March 15, 1912 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, for the A. H. Bull Steamship Lines and was launched on July 3, 1912.
The " S.S. Carolyn " for 30 years carried freight and passengers between the West Indies and ports on the eastern seaboard of the U.S. During World War I she received a main battery of one 3 in (76 mm) and one 5 in (130 mm) gun, and a Navy armed guard detachment served in the ship from June 28, 1917 thru November 11, 1918. The " S.S. Carolyn " was turned over to the U.S. Navy under a bareboat charter on February 12, 1942.
The " S.S. Carolyn " was given it's main and secondary batteries as well as sound gear and renamed as the " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " and was placed in commission on March 5, 1942.
The main mission of the " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " was to lure some unsuspecting German U-boat into making a torpedo attack. According to the mission scenario, the submarine, having deemed the " cargo tramp ship " unworthy of the expenditure of more torpedoes, would surface to sink the crippled foe with gunfire. The plan presupposed that supporting forces would come to the rescue whenever a Q-ship ran into difficulties.
The Attack on the " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) "
The " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) ", at 02.37 hours on March 27, 1942, was hit on the port side ahead of the bridge by one G7e torpedo fired from " German submarine U-123 " about 300 miles east of Norfolk.
The ship caught fire where it was hit and settled by the bow with a list to port. When the U-boat commander Hardegen observed how the crew abandoned ship on starboard he went closer to finish off the vessel. The " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " dropped her concealment and opened fire from all weapons including depth charge projectors.
The U-boat immediately ran off at utmost speed and was only hit on her bridge by .50 cal fire which fatally wounded one of the U-Boat's crew. " U-123 " dived when out of range and then approached the " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " which did not sink due her floating cargo.
The " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " was then hit by a torpedo in the engine room and the ship settled by the bow until the screw was out of the water. At 05.50 hours, the " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) " was gone after several heavy detonations, probably the fire had ignited the ammunition aboard and the depth charges went off when the ship sank.
Of the 141 crew members aboard the
" U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) ",
The entire crew of " 141 " lost their lives !
The following below listing was created in the memory of those that SERVED ON " AND " those who " GAVE THEIR ALL " on the " U.S.S. Atik ( AK-101 ) ".
There are personal " Online Memorials " for each of these honored men and women that were created for them by using the " Find A Grave Website ". On the " Majority " of the online memorials you will see a small biography for each soldier which may include:
