      The following list displays those who served as United States Senators for the State of Delaware.   From the year "1789" until "1916" U.S. Senators were chosen by the General Assembly of the State when necessary.   In 1916 the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution made it a requirement that each person be elected by the popular vote of the people.
